secular adjective: temporal, worldly, earthly, profane.
Believe it or not, I’ve been listening to “secular” music from time to time on the radio. The one thing that strikes me most about secular music is it’s ability to speak to the human condition; the unquenchable need for something “more”. Switchfoot said it best in their song Something More:
Theres gotta be something more Than what I’m living for I’m crying out to you
For a time, I went through a phase in my life where I thought if I had the best car, computer, a good paying job and a girlfriend I’d be happy; if I had nothing left wanting I’d be able to live life to it’s fullest. Guess what? I got the best computer (well nearly) and I got a nice car, and I got a really good paying job, and I even got a girlfriend, yet I was still left wanting. I found myself in the same boat with the rest of the world; crying out for something more, something to fill that unfillable void. Everything I had aquired, left me longing for more.
Secular culture, particularly music, speaks directly to the work that God has done in my life. For me, it’s the best expression of what God has saved me from. I now no longer want; Jesus is my all-in-all.
The Psalmist said it best:
Psalm 145:16 Thou dost open Thy hand, And dost satisfy the desire of every living thing.

Jacob,
This blog is so true. I find that in my own life I sometimes seek for life (things, people, Sin, etc.) to fell the void that is there. But without Christ, life leaves us emptyer day by day. In my own life I found that only Christ can feel the hole that sin has created in my life and with out him I am empty. It reminds of the song “better is one day” because, better is one day with Christ then 1000 day’s any ware without him (even 1,000 day’s on a sunny beach) each day I spend trying my own thing and running from the lord I see the void becomes bigger and bigger. but each day I spend in the arms of Christ the void gets smaller and smaller. Each day we must choose who we will serve Joshua 24:15.

It’s so easy to fill our days with meaningless stuff and forget the reason, our whole purpose for existing - God. We can even get so invloved in being religious, we stop spending time with Him (Luke 10:40-42 - Mary and Martha). Its a constant battle for me (and others as well, I’d hazard a gues)to stay focussed on The Lord.
Great blog Jacob - I’ve just started one myself - http://jesusbethecentre.blogspot.com - if you’re interested.
